The spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting workplaces across the globe. To protect those most vulnerable to the virus, an increasing amount of companies are encouraging social distancing techniques and mandating their employees to work remotely indefinitely.
For some organizations, the shift to a remote workplace will be relatively simple. For instance, our team at Nowspeed Marketing had a relatively seamless transition to a full-time work from home (WFH) operation as most of our team works remotely about half of the week on a regular basis. For other businesses who have not already adopted a remote work strategy, the change will be more of a challenge for their employees. Disruptions to your staff’s typical routine can affect their productivity and overall morale during an already difficult time.
For those of you who are new to working from home, we’re here to help. Check out these tips and tricks we use to craft an effective WFH approach that keeps our team engaged, strategic and on task!
1. Designate a Workspace
Though the idea of working from home is appealing to many, when it comes time to settling in and getting things done, you’ll quickly realize it’s easy to be pulled away from tasks by various distractions. Establishing a quiet, private workstation that separates you from other stimulus in your home will help you stay focused and productive. If you have limited space, designating a spot as your “office” (i.e. the kitchen table, desk in your room) and setting boundaries with others in the home (your spouse, roommates, or children) will help you stay concentrated!
2. Establish a Routine
Figure out what works for you! Just because you aren’t physically in the office, doesn’t mean you can’t follow a schedule. Make an effort to start and end your workday around the same time each day. Sticking to a schedule will help you get less side-tracked throughout the day and ultimately help you be more productive.
3. Stay Connected
Don’t isolate while working from home – it’s easy to feel lonely especially if you live alone. It’s important to maintain communication with your coworkers and clients, especially during unorthodox times. Schedule face-to-face virtual calls to review goals, client initiatives, or to simply check-in with others. With today’s technology, there’s unlimited options to stay connected!
4. Communicate Effectively
It’s important to note that communication is key while working remotely. Make sure that your team knows how to reach you if, and when they need too. Be transparent with your schedule by marking your calendar with meetings, appointments, or other commitments so it’s clear when you’re available. This will ensure that you’re not interrupted during important calls or trying to be reached when you’re offline.
5. Dress for Success
Activate that look good feel good mentality! Though it’s tempting, try not to work in your pajamas all day. Studies show that dressing for success will help you stay focused and perform better work, even if you’re in the comfort of your own home. Because of this, we recommend continuing to get ready for the day as if you would really be going to the office. Practicing this will hep you distinguish working from relaxing, even if your scenery doesn’t change.
6. Give Yourself Breaks
Allow yourself the opportunity to reset! Our employees are encouraged to find a healthy way to break up the day and refresh their minds. Consider a midday walk, run or jog as an excuse to step away from your workload. Don’t let cabin fever get the best of you!
7. Stay Positive
Change is often difficult. Be easy on yourself and take the time you need to become comfortable in your new work situation. Like any transition, acknowledge that it will take time to get used to. If you start to feel frustrated or discouraged, don’t hesitate to reach out to your manager or supervisor for help. Remember that your team is in this together, and with the help of your colleagues you’ll be able to make it through.
